The youngest citizens of our community need your help!
Their voice for future government investment in the early years must be heard.  As caregivers, parents, grandparents, and community members – we are their voice!

Lethbridge Early Years Coalition is making a difference for young families and children in our community.  Initiatives such as Lethbridge Roving Gyms, LSKIP (Lethbridge Seniors and Kids Intergenerational Program, Lethbridge Play Charter and the National Child Day Celebration are some initiatives spearheaded through LEYC in our community.  LEYC fosters inter-agency collaboration that uses emerging research and leading practices resulting in more supports and services for families with young children.  The work to support our youngest citizens is being done yet we are at risk of losing the momentum, partnerships and progress we’ve made.

LEYC operates on a yearly grant of $22,500 and provides great value to the community for this small government investment.  Please write to the government on behalf of our youngest citizens and request the continued funding of Early Childhood Coalitions of Alberta.

What is your party's plan to invest in Early Childhood Development?

- A 1% increase of the high school completion rate in Canada would save $7.7 billion in social assistance, costs of crime, lost earnings and more.
- For every dollar spent in early education, there is between a $2 and $7 return on investment.
- Greater skills development in early childhood makes it more likely that children will succeed in education; raising employment prospects and reducing duration of unemployment.

How will your party support children in their early years to improve school readiness?
- More than one in four Albertan children are struggling in their development by kindergarten, a higher percentage than the Canadian norm.
- Across Alberta, there are nearly 100 regional Early Childhood Coalitions such as Lethbridge Early Years Coalition, providing local responses to help kids prepare for school.
- If a child doesn't have a 5,000 word vocabulary by kindergarten, they are less likely to meet grade level reading by Grade 3, an important determinant for high school completion.

What is your party's plan to end child poverty?
- Quality, affordable child care programs benefit young children and increase the employment earning potential of families.  However, average median childcare fees in Alberta are $950 - $1,200 per month.
- Development suffers when poverty causes high parental stress due to unstable housing, unsafe communities, unemployment and chronic scarcity.
- Children who grow up in poverty are at greater risk for low literacy since there are fewer books in the home and more barriers to visiting a public library.
